Hay muchos tipos de pipe bevelings, the ends of which are cut at a specific angle and become “beveled ends” or “beveled ends”. Proper pipe preparation ensures a high quality weld.

A pipe bevel is a sloping angle formed on the end of a pipe or tube for weld preparation or deburring. The standard bevel angle for pipe welding ends is ‌37.5° ± 2.5°‌ with a root face (land) of ‌1.6mm ± 0.4mm‌. This manufacturing process improves the firmness of the welded connection while making the pipe ends smoother and more aesthetically pleasing, which greatly avoids the occurrence of safety accidents during use.

Why Perform Pipe Beveling?

Pipe Beveling is a crucial technique in pipe welding, enhancing the durability of pipeline systems and ensuring optimal welded pipe performance. This process is widely used in oil and gas pipeline systems. The importance of beveling lies in the following points:

1. Increased Weld Strength: Beveling, due to its thinner edges, allows for stronger welding of thicker pipe sections.

2. Reduced Material Waste: Beveling minimizes the amount of welding material required, reducing costs and environmental pollution.

3. Increased Pipeline Safety: Experiments have shown that beveled pipes have a longer service life after welding than unbeveling pipes.

Pipe Bevel Types

According to the shape of the steel pipe end and welding requirements, pipe beveling can be divided into the following types:

I-Type Butt Joint

I-Type Butt Joint

Type I joints, also known as flat joints, are suitable for pipes from 1 to 6 mm thick. The advantages are cost-effective and simple to handle. However, the welding strength is low and is not recommended for thick walled pipes.

Single U Bevel End

Single U Bevel End

Single U bevel is a one-sided welded joint with a bevel angle that is not easily deformed and requires very little filler material for welding. However, the arc shape makes it difficult to process.

Double V Bevel End

Double V Bevel End

Double V bevel, also known as X-bevel, is improved from the single V bevel. Need to double-sided welding, after welding one side of the pipeline needs to be turned over and then welded on the other side, suitable for 12 to 60 mm thick pipe. The bevel is narrower and requires less welding consumables.

Single V Bevel End

Single V Bevel End

Single V bevel is the most common type of pipe bevel, the bevel angle is generally between 40 and 60 degrees. Compared to Type I joints, it is more robust in construction but more costly. However, this type of beveling is prone to deformation during processing.

Pipe Beveling Methods

Hand Grinding

Hand grinding is the cheapest but riskiest beveling method. It is time-consuming, the consistency of the beveling quality is difficult to control, and the generation of a large number of waste chips is also a very troublesome problem.

Flame Or Plasma Cutting

Flame or plasma cutting is more efficient than hand grinding, but its disadvantage is that it needs to manually process the cut plane, there are certain safety risks. And this method has narrow material applicability.

Portable Beveling Machine

Portable beveling machine configuration and has a high degree of operational safety. Its portability allows the operator to bring the equipment to the construction site, thus improving time efficiency and flexibility. However, this method cannot meet the demands of mass production.

Stationary Bevelers

Stationary bevelers offer the most processing options and flexibility. They are suitable for high production demands and can be integrated with automated production lines, reducing the operator’s workload.

How To Choose The Right Pipe Bevel

These factors should be considered when choosing a beveling method:

  • Bevel quality and specification requirements: Beveling methods that can meet specific specifications.
  • Time Cost: A specific assessment of the processing time for beveling each pipe is required.
  • Site safety hazard assessment: Possible safety hazards need to be assessed.
  • Pipe Portability: Whether the pipe can be moved to the equipment in a portable manner.
  • Equipment portability: Can it be accommodated for construction sites where flexibility is required.
