ASTM A106 Grade C is a standard developed by the Société américaine des matériaux et des essais (ASTM) and is a steel grade of the ASTM A106 standard.

 

ASTM A106 Grade C is specifically designed for carbon steel tubes that transport liquids and gases under high temperature and pressure conditions. With its excellent high temperature resistance, it is widely used in the thermal transmission system of power stations, pipeline systems in the oil and gas industry.

Types of ASTM A106 Grade C Pipes

- ASTM A106 Grade C Type S – Seamless Pipe

ASTM A106 Grade C Type S is a hot-rolled seamless steel pipe. Without the need for welding, this manufacturing process produces tubes with uniform wall thickness and excellent internal and external quality. Strength and corrosion resistance is better than welded pipe, often used in oil refineries, chemical equipment and power plant heat transmission system.

- ASTM A106 Grade C Type E – Electric Resistance Welded Pipe

ASTM A106 Grade C Type E piping uses the Resistance welding (ERW) manufacturing process for excellent weldability and is commonly used in piping systems with small diameters and thin pipe walls. For example, building structural plumbing systems and fluid transmission pipelines.

- ASTM A106 Grade C Type F - SAW, Submerged Arc Welded

ASTM A106 Grade C Type F steel pipe is manufactured using the welding melting (SAW) process, which is completed by the protection of a molten electrode and powder flux. ASTM A106 Grade C Type F steel pipe is commonly used in chemical equipment and other applications where corrosion resistance and strength are required.

TEST & INSPECTION DURING ASTM A106 GRADE C PIPE PRODUCTION

  • Chemical composition analysis – Spectral analysis and chemical analysis are commonly used to analyze the chemical composition of steel, including carbon content, phosphorus content, sulfur content (S), etc. The chemical composition directly affects the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and weldability of the pipeline, which is the basis for ensuring the quality of the pipeline material.
  • Surfaces and dimensions – Visual inspection and evaluation of measuring instruments for dimensional accuracy and appearance quality of pipes, etc.
  • Mechanical properties testing – including yield testing, tensile testing, etc. Ensure that the pipeline can maintain good stability and load capacity in different environments.
  • Impact testing – The impact toughness of the pipeline is tested. Impact toughness tests assess the impact resistance of pipelines at low temperatures to ensure safe operation in cold environments.
  • Pressure test – Perform a water pressure test or air pressure test to check the tightness and pressure resistance of the pipeline. Ensure pipe tightness and pressure resistance.

TYPE OF ASTM A106 GRADE C PIPE ENDS

  • Welded Ends: Pipe ends are machined and connected to other parts of the pipe through a welding process. The Welding types include Butt Welding and Socket Welding.
  • Threaded Ends: machined internal or external threaded on pipe end to connect with other pipe components or fittings through threaded connections or threaded fittings. There are NPT, National Pipe Thread, G, BSPP and other different thread types.
  • Flanged Ends: The pipe ends are processed into flanged interfaces, which are fixed and sealed with other flanged parts or devices through flange connection bolts and gaskets. Select different flange types according to pressure rating and diameter. For example, Weld Neck Flange, Blind Flange and so on.
