ASTM A53 Grade B
ASTM A53 Grade B pipe (also known as ASME SA53 pipe) is designed for mechanical and pressure applications, but it is also suitable for general use in steam, water, gas, and airlines. Subject to particular conditions, it is ideal for welding as well as shaping operations like coiling, bending, and flanging.
ASTM A53 Grade B pipe is appropriate for welding and covers Seamless and Welded, Black and Hot-Dipped Galvanized nominal (average) wall pipe for coiling, bending, flanging, and other specific operations. Flanging is not recommended for the continuous-welded pipe. The purpose for which the pipe is designed should be specified in the order.

Types of ASTM A53 Grade B Pipes
- ASTM A53 Grade B Type E – Electric Resistance Welded Pipe.
The longitudinal junction of Type E Garde B pipes is welded by heat generated by electric resistance between the pipe’s opposite ends. In this operation, a set of rollers is also used to connect heated ends. The weld seam of ASTM A53 Grade B pipes is heat-treated to a minimum of 540°C after welding.

ASTM A53 Grade B type S pipes are made by the extrusion method. An open-hearth furnace, an electric furnace, or a basic-oxygen process is used to produce the raw steel needed to build pipes.

Test & Inspection During ASTM A53 Grade A Pipe Production
- Analyse chimique - Nombre d'essais : 2 pièces par lot de 500 ou 2 pièces par chaleur (si l'un des tuyaux est défaillant, deux pièces supplémentaires du même lot doivent être testées).
- Essai de traction – This test is performed to assess the mechanical properties of the ASTM A53 Grade B pipe. In the case of welded pipe, the weld strength shall not be less than the pipe body strength.
- Bending Test – On pipe diameters NPS 2 and less, a bending test is performed to determine the ductility of the ASTM A53 Grade B pipe. The bend test could be 90 degrees or 180 degrees, depending on the situation.
- Test d'aplatissement – For ductility, ASTM A53 Grade B pipe sizes greater than NPS 2 are flattening test. In line with ASTM A53, a pipe sample is sliced and flattened between two flat surfaces.
- Hydro-Test – This is a test that is performed on each length of the pipe to determine whether or not there is a leak. The pressure must be maintained for at least 5 seconds.
- Weld Seam Ultrasonic or Electromagnetic Test – This non-destructive test is performed throughout the whole length of the weld to check the weld’s integrity.
Type of ASTM A53 Grade B Pipe Ends
- ASTM A53 Grade B Pipes with diameters less than 0.500 inches and STD / XS pipes with plain or beveled ends
- ASTM A53 Grade B Pipe schedules greater than 0.500 inches in diameter and XXS: Ends are squared cut and simple.
