ASTM A106

ASTM A106 is a seamless steel pipe standard developed by the American Society for Materials and Testing (ASTM), and the standard steel pipe is mainly responsible for the high temperature and high pressure environmental conditions of the transport of fluids. Its excellent physical and chemical properties make it widely used in a variety of industrial fields.

ASTM A106 steel pipe mainly covers three grades: Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C. The ASTM A106 pipe process is mainly seamless, which ensures the pipe’s high-pressure resistance and reduces the risk of piping system. TUSPIPE produces pipes that are hydrostatically tested, non-destructively tested electrically, and mechanically tested to ensure the quality of the pipe.

For temperatures > 300°C and pipe diameters > DN300, hot-rolled pipes can be selected. For operating pressures > 6 MPa and at room temperature, cold-drawn pipes can be selected.

ASTM A106 Production Process and Quality Control

  1. Smelting process: It can be smelted by alkaline oxygen furnace, electric arc furnace or flat furnace, with optional vacuum degassing refining.
  2. Forming method: Hot rolling process and cold drawing process are used, precision size needs to be through the heat treatment of not less than 650 ℃ to eliminate stress.
  3. Heat treatment requirements: Hot rolled tubes can be heat treated to enhance performance, cold drawn tubes must be annealed.

ASTM A106 Testing Program

  • Non-destructive testing (NDT): Eddy current testing and ultrasonic testing.
  • Destructive testing: Tensile test, flattening test, hardness test.
  • Surface quality: No defects such as cracks and folds on the inner and outer walls as required by SSPC-SP6 surface treatment standards.
