The disadvantages of pipeline transportation are mainly the high initial investment and subsequent construction and maintenance costs. It is vulnerable to geographical and political constraints that prevent the construction of pipelines. Pipelines can leak or explode when buried underground or travelling through remote areas under extreme conditions, resulting in economic losses and human casualties.
