ASTM A179

ASTM A179 is a standard developed by the American Society for Materials and Testing (ASTM). The standard applies to Seamless Cold-Drawn Low-Carbon Steel Heat-Exchanger and Condenser Tubes with diameters less than 3 inches (76.2mm).

ASTM A179-standard piping improves system performance and efficiency in the cooling process and heat exchange of industrial equipment.

  • Low Carbon Content: The carbon content is usually in the range of 0.06-0.18 per cent which ensures good ductility and low hardness for cold working and welding.
  • Excellent low temperature properties: Due to the low carbon content, these tubes exhibit excellent impact toughness at low temperatures.
  • Cold Drawing Process: Manufactured using cold drawing process, the tubes are characterised by clean surface, high dimensional accuracy and more uniform mechanical properties.
  • Good welding performance: Mild steel is easy to weld, not prone to welding cracks and other problems.
  • Corrosion resistance: Although not as strong as stainless steel, it still performs well in most steam and cold water systems.

Steel Grade of ASTM A179

The ASTM A179/A179M standard covers both ASTM A179 Grade A and ASTM A179 Grade C steel grades. These two steel grades have some differences in mechanical properties and application scope, which need to be selected according to the use environment and engineering requirements.

ASTM A179 Grade A
ASTM A179 Grade A has a minimum yield strength of 35 ksi (240 MPa). Suitable for mild general industrial heat exchanger applications such as heat exchangers and condensers.

ASTM A179 Grade C
ASTM A179 Grade C has a minimum yield strength of 47 ksi (325 MPa). High yield strength for applications requiring high temperature and high pressure environments.

DIMENSIONS AND SIZES OF ASTM A179 PIPE

The ASTM A179/A179M standard is strictly in accordance with the specifications developed by the American Society for Materials and Testing. There are requirements and regulations on the dimensions and sizes of seamless cold drawn mild steel pipes.

The main applicable pipe sizes are:

  • Outside diameters: 1/8 “to 3” / 3.2 mm -76.2 mm
  • Wall thickness: 1.65mm – 7mm
  • DN6 – DN80
  • Length: 3000 mm – 25000 mm

The ASTM A179/A179M standard provides guidelines for parameters such as the size standard and scope of pipes, and provides a detailed reference for the engineering design and material selection of piping systems.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION REQUIREMENT OF ASTM A179 PIPE

The chemical composition of ASTM A179/A179M pipe has an important impact on the corrosion resistance and suitability of the pipe. ASTM A179/A179M standard steel pipe chemical composition mainly includes carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon and other elements.

The content and balance of each chemical element is related to the properties of the pipe.

For example, the carbon content is less than 0.06%.
Manganese is between 0.27 and 0.63%, which has an impact on the hardness and strength of the pipe.
Phosphorus ≤0.035%, too high will reduce the weldability and cold working performance of steel.
Silicon in 0.10-0.35%, improve the strength and wear resistance of steel.

Manganese, % 0.27–0.63
Phosphorus, max, % 0.035
Sulfur, max, % 0.035

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ASTM A179 PIPE

ASTM A179/A179M steel pipes are subject to rigorous mechanical properties testing, such as tensile testing, yield testing, static water testing, etc. Ensure that the pipe produced has good tensile strength, yield strength and elongation. Ensure the stable and safe operation of the pipeline system to meet the needs of diverse industrial production.

ASTM A179/A179M Steel Pipe Reprocessing

ASTM A179/A179M steel pipes often work under extreme conditions such as high temperature and pressure, and can enhance their corrosion resistance and mechanical properties through the surface coating processing process to extend their service life.

ASTM A179/A179M steel pipe surface coating processes include, but are not limited to, the following types.

    • Polishing coating: The surface of the steel pipe is polished to make the surface smooth and smooth, and reduce surface defects and roughness.
    • Oil coating: The surface of the steel pipe is coated with a layer of protective grease or wax. This coating is often used for short-term transportation, which can effectively reduce surface oxidation and corrosion.
    • Hot dip galvanizing coating: The steel plate is put into a molten zinc solution to form a zinc-iron alloy coating or pure zinc layer on the steel surface, and the zinc layer sacrifices itself to protect the steel. This coating has excellent stability and is widely used in Marine engineering and other fields.

TUSPIPE Steel Tube Manufacturer, with three complete tube production lines, produces steel tubes not only for boiler piping industry but also for a wide range of applications:

1. What Is the Difference between ASTM A106 and A179?

ASTM A106 and ASTM A179 are both part of the American Standards System, but they have some differences.

ASTM A106 is a seamless carbon steel pipe designed for high-temperature applications, available in both hot-rolled and cold-drawn forms. It is commonly used in high-temperature, high-pressure transportation pipelines.

ASTM A179 is a standard for seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel pipes used in heat exchangers and condensers. It is only available in cold-drawn form. It is primarily used in heat exchanger tubes, condenser tubes, and other heat exchange equipment.

SA 179 steel pipes can withstand temperatures of at least 450°F (232°C) and can withstand temperatures of up to 540°C for short periods. Additionally, these seamless pipes can maintain operational stability under extreme temperatures.

The ASTM A179 standard requires the pipe’s Rockwell hardness to be ≤72 HRB (Rockwell Hardness, B scale), which is approximately equivalent to a Vickers hardness of ≤126HV. This result is obtained through Rockwell hardness testing. This allows the pipe material to be bent and cold-worked without heating.
