SSAW TUBO
SSAW stands for spiral submerged arc welding. It involves spirally coiling steel plates and welding them together using a submerged arc welding process to create a complete steel pipe. Steel pipes produced using this technology offer stable welds, high production efficiency, and minimal air pollution. These pipes are widely used in pressure vessels and pipeline transportation.
Our SSAW steel pipes offer the following advantages:
- High weld quality and superior strength compared to other processes.
- The pipes are adaptable to corrosive environments, have a long service life, and are relatively low cost.
- High-grade steel materials such as X80 and X100 can be used.
- Diameters range from 219mm to 3000mm.

SSAW Steel Pipe Standards
The raw material of SSAW pipe is mainly hot-rolled steel strip. The choice of raw materials has a great influence on the final steel pipe. Generally covers the following types of steel:
- X42: Steel for oil pipelines with tensile strength of 420 MPa, often used for long-distance transportation of fluids such as oil and natural gas.
- X52: With high strength, the tensile strength can reach 520 MPa, for high strength and high pressure environment.
- Q235: carbon structural steel, yield strength is usually 235 MPa, often used for ordinary low-pressure fluid transport.
- Q345: low-alloy high-strength structural steel, typically with yield strength of 345 MPa, used for high-pressure fluid transport.
More importantly, the chemical composition control of the raw material steel plate of SSAW pipe is also very strict. The content and proportion of each chemical element affect the corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance of the pipe
- Carbon (C) : 0.12%-0.20%
- Silicon (Si) : 0.20%-0.35%
- Manganese (Mn) : 0.60%-0.90%
- Sulfur (S) : ≤0.035%
- Phosphorus (P) : ≤0.035%
SSAW PIPE STANDARDS
The manufacture and production of SSAW pipe cannot be separated from international standards and guidance.
- API 5L: The API 5L standard SSAW pipe is used for pipeline transportation with the oil and gas industry. Depending on the applicable pressure level, it usually covers X42, X52, X60, and X70.
- ISO 3183: Similar to API 5L, the standard mainly regulates the specification and size, mechanical properties, chemical composition, etc., of steel pipes for the oil and gas industry.
- GB/T 3091: SSAW pipe for general construction. The tensile strength is usually 370-470 MPa
SSAW pipe production process
The manufacturing process of SSAW pipe is a very complex and delicate process. Every link in the manufacturing process has an important impact on the final performance of the pipe.
The following is the production process of SSAW pipe.

- Winding: The steel strip is heated to 800-1000°C, and it is rolled through the winding machine into a spiral shape. The spiral Angle is controlled from 30° to 75° during the rolling process to ensure that the size and shape of the pipe meet the requirements.
- Welding: Using submerged arc welding technology, strict control of welding temperature, current, voltage and other parameters. Current: 2000-2500 A. Voltage: 30-40 V. Wire feed speed: 6-8 m/min. Weld the wire and arc to form a weld.
- Heat treatment: Often use annealing, normalizing, quenching and other heat treatment processes to strengthen the toughness and strength of the pipe mechanical properties.
- Sizing and cutting: Using the sizing machine to adjust the outer diameter and wall thickness of the pipe, the accuracy range is controlled within ±0.5 mm.
- Surface treatment: Through this step, the pipe is cleaned and treated with corrosion protection. Generally, anti-corrosion coating and rust removal are used.
- Inspection and testing: Check whether the mechanical properties of the pipe meet the standard control through appearance inspection, size measurement, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation test of the pipe, as well as impact test and tensile test.

1. What Is a DSAW Pipe?
DSAW Pipe stands for Double Submerged Arc Welded. It is a type of pipe manufactured using the double-sided submerged arc welding process. This process results in overlapping inner and outer welds, ensuring exceptional weld quality. DSAW pipes are available in sizes ranging from 406 to 1626 mm in diameter and 6 to 120 mm in wall thickness. They are commonly used in large-scale structural engineering projects and high-pressure oil and gas transportation systems.
2. Which Type of Manufactured Steel Pipe Is the Strongest?
X140-grade steel pipes are hot-mechanically controlled process (TMCP) rolled pipes. They are also known as TMCP process pipes. Their yield strength is ≥965 MPa, and tensile strength is ≥1035 MPa. X140-grade steel pipes are used in extreme environments such as deep-sea and polar regions.
3. How to Identify ERW Pipes?
Resistance-welded pipes can be identified by visual inspection. ERW steel pipes have longitudinal welds. Generally, the surface of manufactured ERW pipes is printed with the “Type E” mark, indicating that the pipe was manufactured using resistance welding.
